RWE npower has received the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) certificate for significantly reducing the amount of rubbish it sends to landfills each year.

Currently the only energy company to receive this award, the CTS accolade acknowledges how the energy supplier and its employees work together to ensure that waste is recycled and items are re-used as much as possible.

The award is the result of the CTS auditing npower’s Swindon head-quarters and Solihull hub and the judges were notably impressed with the company’s waste facilities and culture to reducing landfill.

Sustainability and Capital Investment Manager Dave Horton said, “We’re delighted to receive this award from the CTS. We’ve worked extremely hard to reduce our waste by investing in new recycling points across all of our site and by promoting a proactive attitude towards recycling throughout the company - so it’s an honour to see this has paid off.”

The assessors also reviewed statistics for office waste for the last three years and investigated the difference refurbishment projects have made to the amount of waste the company produces.

Darren Messem, CEO of CTS, commented, “By achieving the carbon trust standard, npower and all employees are demonstrating the commitment to manage resources responsibly, and taking steps to continue to reduce resource consumption, and capture the financial benefits."

Mr Messem continued, "npower has been working with the carbon trust since 2009. We are delighted they have become the first company in its sector to be awarded the carbon trust waste standard."

This year’s certificate follows a previous CTS award RWE npower received in 2013, which recognised the company continually reducing its carbon footprint. It was awarded upon the company’s ability to measure, manage and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions - by using the same products and services it offers business customers to become more energy efficient.
