Ecover’s fantastic Plant-astic – helping to change the future of packaging
by Stuart at 2011-03-09 16:00:14 (News)
Ecover is once again leading the way with its green innovations. Plant-astic is a 100% renewable, reusable and recyclable plastic made from sugarcane and Ecover is the first cleaning brand in the UK to use it.
After three years of research into alternative packaging options, Ecover will begin the switch from its current packaging to make all products Plant-astic, cementing its status as a pioneering, ecological company. From April 2011, Plant-astic will be used across the Ecover range from fabric softener to floor soap, and limescale remover to laundry liquid.

Ecover’s brand manager Emma Bennetts says: “We have a committed investment in improving our products and the way we operate, and our packaging is part of this. We were originally planning to use 30% renewable plastic for our packaging and although this was a huge step in the right direction, it didn’t feel like it was enough, so we waited until it was possible to make it 100% Plant-astic and now we know we are doing everything we can to reduce the amount of conventional plastic entering the home. We hope this will set the trend and show that it is possible to make big changes that will have a big impact.”

Manufacturing Plant-astic is simple – sugarcane is harvested to produce sugar, which is then fermented and distilled to produce ethanol. This ethanol is dehydrated to create ethylene, which is polymerized into Plant-astic. That’s really all there is to it.
