Proven 6000 and Noise.
by Nigel Wilson at 2006-11-28 15:42:30 (Ask an Expert)
I'm working on my environmental statement-still! I've been out in wonderful sunshine this afternoon re taking pictures of the site from all points of the compass and from 50 to 2000 m away. I'm superimposing a model of the turbine on these photos so the planners can see what the locals would see.

The nearest corner of the house of my nearest neighbour is 50 m from my proposed site. The house is also down wind of the prevailing wind though in the "shadow" of my house. Would my neighbours they be able to hear my turbine from within their house ?
Cheers,
Nigel

Nigel,

The top line message is that the turbine will not make enough noise to annoy your neighbours. It does operate below the background noise level at my location. This does not mean it is silent it does produce a noise that you can hear. The furthest I have heard this noise is about 90m from the turbine. It is not loud and easily drowned out any other noise but occasionally you can hear it outside. The turbine is very silent but it is distinct.

It will not be possible to hear the turbine in doors ever I am sure. I never had and none of my neighbours have complained.

The turbine is at its most noisy when the wind is blowing at full pelt but the turbine is not producing electricity. This is caused either through a sudden gust that hasn't blown long enough for the inverter to start generation or that the Grid connection is down. In these very rare situations the turbine would make more noise as it furls to shed speed, but this is very very rare.

The video of my turbine has sound and you can just hear it in that.

For my planning application I bought a cheap sound meter and recorded the background noise throughout the day and night. The council then came to check my figures and thus saved me the expense of a hiring the correct equipment and consultants.

Good luck

PS do post up your pictures as it would be great to see your location.

Stuart,
Thanks for your helpful response.
I will post my photos. Where and how please? They are pictures in Word documents and around 1100 kb each.
Cheers,
Nigel

Word isn't the ideal format for presenting information on the web (least of all pictures), so if you want to email the .docs to me I'll extract and upload them for you.

webmaster [at] renew-reuse-recycle.com will be the best address to use.

Feel free to ZIP the .docs up into a single archive first.

Alternatively, if you have the .jpgs on their own (ie not in a Word doc) that'd be better.

Cheers
