Either ice dropped from an aircraft (suggested on the Today programme), or a freak tornado/extreme turbulence (similar to the occasional 'monster' waves/eddies experienced at sea).

Or it's the local yoof.

Some how I dont see either of those as likely. The blades are incredible strong, and I cant see the ice from a plane being able to sheer one off and bend the next one. As to a tornado, why would it affect only one turbine in the park.

I would guess it was an engineering fault that led to a blade coming loose and then hitting the other one.

Tornados can be tiny and touch down momentarily, it's the differential stresses involved that are enormous in the vortex. Wingtip vortices used to wreak havoc when I lived near Heathrow on the final approach path.

Be interesting to know what the weather conditions were like at the time - cold yes, but what windspeed and pressure?

Yes was the turbine in motion? If it was stationary then the mystery would deepen.

Hi Stuart,

These turbines are just across the river from us, so if I knew which day it happened on I would be able to look at our records for flying cows and other livestock !

There have been some little green men around over the Christmas period, but these were mainly the local youths after copious quantities of alcopops.

Strange things happen in Lincolnshire.

More info on this 'mystery' here - from Telegraph article.
