We're at early stages of considering a domestic turbine. We have space, and wind, and no neighbours within 400m.
I need to do some figures first, though. None of the energy companies seem willing to quote an import/export deal until we have the installation up and running and can actually apply.
So I just wondered what tariffs people are actually getting from various energy companies, for an export metered install.

What sort of tariffs do people get for a 6kW turbine?

It will depend on whether you are a domestic customer or a commercial organisation. Many domestic import/export tariffs are fairly good, and often roll in the ROCS. Commercial export could be as low as 4p/kWh since you're essentially selling on the wholesale market - particularly with a turbine where a lot of export is going to be between midnight and 7am. -- Quisling |

We are a domestic customer, currently with Scottish Hydro Electric both in terms of our connection, and our billing -- aesmith |

We are customers of the Hydro Board, who are owned by Scottish and Southern Energy. Our contract is with Scottish and Southern through their micro generation department which is located in Wales. They fit an import/export meter free, act as your agent and do all the paperwork free, pay 5p per unit for exported units and 5p for every unit produced for ROCs. Maybe not the best deal out there, but they have kept us supplied through storms and snow over the years. When we contacted them and said we were getting a turbine and would like to deal with them, the import export meter was fitted next day.

Thanks for that.
Much as I like the idea of generating my own, it doesn't seem like the economics stack up. Even if we got 12,000 units a year, and exported it all then we'd only get a £1200 return on the £22,000 or so investment. Do people generally feel their turbines pay their way, or is it more like a hobby?
It also seems like some of these "total generation" schemes which pay nothing for export might not be such a bad idea. At 9p per unit, that would be a better deal unless I was exporting over 80% or our output. |

Hi Tony,
As you correctly point out, the return on your investment is not so viable if your production is low. Whilst wind resource is a very important factor, so is having a productive and reliable turbine. I suggest you have a look at the turbine production data on this site (link from the home page), as this is very revealing! Also bear in mind, that as of 1st April, ROCS will be doubling for small turbines (<50 kW) and this will be a big help. In places like Orkney, Eoltec turbine owners see anything from 16,000 to 26,000 kWh a year. With a 10p N power export tarrif and single ROC's at ~4p (in the hand) at present, thats anywhere between £2,240 a year and £3,640 a year. When double ROC's come along, these figures become £2,880 and £4,680 a year respectively. Cheers

Bryan,
You say "Also bear in mind, that as of 1st April, ROCS will be doubling for small turbines (<50 kW) and this will be a big help." I didn't know that. Is that April 2009, or April 2008 but not yet reflected in tariffs? Actually now I look again, I see Ecotricity's offer was upped from 4.5p to 9p in May. I guess that must be the same change. Now 9p/unit generated plus 10p/unit exported, that sounds a lot better. We need to look at the Eoltec as well as Proven. The local installer deals with both, but its mostly Provens that you see around here.

Hi Tony,
Apologies for not being clear. ROC doubling takes place on the 1st of April 2009. Cheers

Bryan,
I've been looking at your web site, and I wondered why you expect so much higher returns from the Eoltec turbines, compared to the Proven 6.
The figures on this web site don't show a huge difference - just comparing the two Orkney Provens with the 6 Orkney Eoltecs. |

Hi Tony,
Suffice to say there are more turbines on Orkney than report their figures on this webpage!

Bryan,
The proof is in the pudding. Can you encourage the other turbines to post their figures. So everyone can see how the turbines compare.
I especially would like to see some figures from other makes, for example the WES Tulipo, or some of the US Turbines. |

Hi Stuart,
I'll see what I can do, but can't promise much. Westray Development Trust have sent me some data for one of their other turbines, a Proven 6 at Westray Parish Kirk. Trouble is, its not in nice monthly parcels, but 3 readings for the whole year - one in September, one in April and one in October. Total production in that time was 11,365 kWh. NOABL windspeed is 7.0 m/s I'll be speaking with them again soon and see if they can help with any monthly readings, and some more up to date readings.

That's apparent from the project list on your website. Coincidently we'll be in Orkney in a couple of weeks time, so we may see some of these installations first-hand. -- aesmith |

NPower currently offer 10p per unit plus about 3.5p for the ROC value.
Only 60% of total generation is counted if you do not have an export meter. ted |
