Although I am pleased with this, I am having problems with the mains voltage flutuations.
Today for instants, we have had steady winds of 30 to 40 mph (I have a Davis weather station at a height of 5m - so the turbine is experiencing 40+mph). With these high winds the mains voltage flutuates - the lights in the house flicker. This is enough for the SMA Windy Boy to cut out (0.2 seconds) The turbine which when under load stays at about 500v dc - varying the ampage to control the output to 6kW. Once offloaded the voltage climbs straight to over 600v! The Windy Boy senses this as an overvoltage and will not allow the turbine to re-connect to the grid. It requires a time of 3 minutes of below 600v before allowing re-connection: hence today it has been offline for most of the day - wasting all this wind!
Dividing the 8mWh by the operating hours, it is achieving approx' 2.2kWh for every hour of operation; this would equate to over 19mWh/year...

Hi peter, You need to contact proven about a voltage regulator, it controls the voltage and does not let it go above 450 to 500v when the the turbine disconnects from the grid. they are sending them out to high wind sites like yours with grid problems. 8 mega watt in twelve months is brilliant! -- Patrick |

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your reply, I had not thought of regulating the generator, only thought of delaying the cutout... I will contact Proven soonest Regards Peter
PS 8mWh in 6 months! |

Proven introduced an over voltage protection feature to the controller range in November 2007. This solution comprises a disconnect function as wells as a 3kw divert facility. Sites where over voltage arise as a result of production in excess of 6kW and subsequnt inverter disconnection will require the optional divert load.
The solution is a retrofit to proven controller, this is available under warrenty if you experience this overloading issue.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for info'; Proven gave me the same story. I'm now on their list for a replacement controller, which as you say should be free under the warranty. They also mentioned the 3kW diverter - I'll hold fire on that, and see how the new controller works... Regards Peter Benning
PS NPower, have just increased my 'generated' power to 11.41p / kWh exported - which they assume is 50% of my generated power. |

Hi Peter Hi all I have exactly the same problem , and have been waiting for months for the new modification I have lost lots of power .. because of over volatge i still have not got a date from proven , and seemingly there first reply was to charge me for the upgrade
This is completely unacceptable as the Turbine as it now stands can not meet its own specification with winds over 40 mph R M

If you are a high wind site, have a 6kW turbine and experience over voltage and are still under warrenty, contact your installer and ask them to install the new replacement controller. -- Craig |

Thanks Craig
I have done that ...
Tks |
