Proven 6KW output
by Simon Ridout at 2007-11-01 07:58:39 (Blog::SimonRidout)
The actual output of a wind turbine is of interest to many. I have therefore decided to 'publish' the output of my Proven 6kw turbine each month. Full details of the location can be found by searching for the Lake District National Parkl Planning Application 7/2006/4107. Wind speeds are about 10% less than those recorded for the nearest Met Office observation site, at St Bees Head. While installed on 30 May 2007, teething problems meant that the turbine was not performing properly until the start of October, indeed October's output equals that in the 4 months before!
Turbine Output October 2007
Total: 331 KWH
Daily output:
Max: 84KWH
Min: 0KWH
0-4 KWH 14 days
5-9 KWH 9 days
10-19 KWH 4 days
20+ KWH 4 days

Simon,

Thats great. Can I propose that we attach a google speadsheet to this story so that lots of us can record our monthly outputs in the same location. What do you think?

I've created one already and it's here:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pMgdBC-cyC82Xq-qAdpGMfw

... anyone who wants to contribute their figures just needs to let me know their Google ID and I can give them access to edit it.

When there's a bit more data, I'll look at ways to incorporate the graph directly into a page hereabouts.

Simon - I've entered your 331 figure for October on your behalf already.

Cheers

There are three points to consider here.

Firstly, to encourage as many as possible to collect and make public data. Secondly, what data is to be collected. Finally, the format for displaying the data.

Most turbine owners will keep data, so it is a question of what data. While I try and record daily output, first thing each morning, this is not always at the same time and if I am away output fot the days are averaged. In my opinion, monthly output is the best compromise between enough data to be useful and excessive data. As to the format, this does not need an early decision, provided that the data is being collected. Indeed until a minimum of 6 months results are collected, it will have little real meaning and it will be most useful after 2 or more years.

A spreadsheet/graph as Simon has started is far more professional than monthly entries on my or others blogs, especially if it accessed from the home page.

Hopefully a through discussion at this stage will help set up what will prove to be a useful database.

simonridout's points re: data collection are very pertinent. FWIW Weather data is collected at 0900z which winter or summer is 0900GMT. As Simon I always average missed (weather) readings unless there is a known pattern of bias toward one or other days' reading.

There is scope for a similar network of published wind generator readings as exists with the weatherunderground for data from automated amateur weather stations. Given not many WG owners will as yet have auto-collected data regular hand entries should suffice.

Do the Americans do this sort of thing, meaning is there an example to look at?

And, the link between weather and WG output is so obvious that some data comparison would be a natural outcome of the exercise.

I've updated the introduction to the Wind Energy forum so that it includes the KWh graph and some info about it.

I'm about to take a look at incorporating a thumbnail image of the graph on the home page. Update: thumbnail now included.

I have an automatic data colleactor (sunny Beam from SMA) that records my hourly ouput. I have a wireless transmitter on the inverter and a receiver in the house. Once a month I connect it to the PC and it uploads the data.

I will write a review on it sometime.

Interesting to see the lower rated Iskra holding its own against the Proven at Hockerton since the new blades went on (in March?).

Hi Simon,

I have had my Proven 6kW up and running since 24 Jul 07. To date it has almost reach 6Mwh in 3000 hours of operation. In November it achieved 1.6mWh.

From The 1st to the 9th December it managed 1Mwh! It will exceed 100kWh today.

It does not seem very windy to us (SY19 7BW). The wind charts said it should be about 5.5M/s. By chance (and the only clear space in the garden) we have a windy spot...

February 2008 - a month of extremes. Started and finished with lots of wind. 3 days with 100 or more KWH, including my best, 117 KWh but 11 days with a total of 9KWH in the middle! Overall, generating for 451 hours, or 65% of the month, producing 1086 KWH or 2.4KW/h of generating time.
