As I was writing in another thread, don't forgot that there are 2 sides to the financial equation! Plenty of people have bought low cost turbines and regretted it, either in terms of short lifespan or low performance. Look carefully at the actual performance of the turbines you are considering - The performance (kWh) figures on this site are a good start.

Don't forget to also look carefully at the actual power curves - Some turbine might claim to be XkW in rating, but only do that at 15-20 m/s, and then rapidly tail off afterwards due to their furling mechanisms.

And also bear in mind some of the other pitfalls cheap turbines fall into - Some of them need to be continuously loaded to keep the speed down because they do not have an inherent mechanical speed control system (you get what you pay for!). Plenty of people have regretted that! We heard of someone here in Orkney who did a DIY install of a cheap turbine that depended on a dump load to keep the speed down. In a breeze of wind last November, it burnt out its dump load, and went supersonic. Nobody would go near it to try and stop it for fear of their lives, and it eventually threw some blades off, then as it became unbalanced, it snapped off the top of the pole and bounced off his roof, seriously damaging it in the process!

Some turbines are more expensive because they are more highly engineered, and that yields returns in higher production and better reliability. The old adage, you get what you pay for!

Cheers
