Is it sense or nonsense to use PV roofing tiles on the south side of a new roof?

Does anyone know of a supplier of freestanding solar PV panels that can be plugged directly into existing household supply 13A sockets (via an inverter, possibly built in to each unit) and used to offset electricity usage?

It was with some trepidation that I went into the cellar this week to take some meter readings in order to find out how the solar panels we had fitted on our house exactly a year ago have been performing. Was the hefty sum of £8,500 we forked out last year a good investment or a waste of money?

I just read an interesting article in the Economist about constructing heat collectors under roads. Which as flat black areas are really good heat sources for gathering solar radiation.

Anyone heard of this company? They claim their solar hot water panels avoid a number of alleged problems with other systems and are therefore more reliable as well as being more efficient.

Is this the begginings of criminal awareness of the value of small scale renewables.
